THE PHOTOGRAPHER: KEN MAHER
Ken Maher has always enjoyed experiencing the natural world and observing wildlife. An environmental lawyer by profession, for more than ten years, he has spent his spare time developing his skills in nature photography. He has traveled extensively throughout North America and particularly in Alaska and Canada in the pursuit of opportunities to photograph nature and wildlife.
Ken has attended photography seminars and taken photo pack trips and photo safaris with a professional photographer guide, but he is a primarily self-taught nature photographer. He has read extensively and acquired a personal library of books about both photography and North American wildlife viewing locations.
One of the ways that Ken has worked at developing his nature photography skills is through the use of the Internet. He has used the Internet and on-line services to study the work of other nature photographers and to discuss techniques and locations for nature photography with other nature photographers. Ken was the leader of the MSN (Microsoft Network) Photography Forums Nature Photography Area from its startup until MSN decided to discontinue its support for such on-line forums. He also was the moderator of the Nature Photography Forum on PhotoPoint.com. His photography has also been published in the PhotoPoint Community Magazine along with his articles on nature photography.
Ken is a contributing photographer to Greyhawks Nature Gallery on the world wide web, where his work has been used in a monthly feature and has been selected as the image of the month on several occasions. His photography hangs in several Indianapolis homes and has been used on Christmas cards and by a graphics company for a motivational poster. The positive reaction to the limited exposure of his work has caused him to expand his offerings of his images. Ken is pleased that a selection of his nature and wildlife photography is now on display at the Ironeyes Gallery in Indianapolis.
Ken uses a number of 35mm and medium format camera bodies and lenses up to 600mm in both formats to obtain his wildlife images. In his pursuit of nature and wildlife, he has traveled by car, commercial airliner, bush plane, float plane, horseback, boat, four wheel drive vehicle, snowmobile, dog sled and, of course, on foot.
